1. The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (Chinese Research Academy of Agricultural Development)

In order to facilitate the development of education, science and technology, and culture in contemporary China, the Ministry of Education of the Chinese Government has established dozens of major academic institutes to advance the studies in various academic fields. The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development in Zhejiang University (CARD) is one of these State-designated institutes which is a multidisciplinary, open research institution under the direct leadership of ZJU in which the responsibility systems of the Executive Board and Director-General have been introduced.The center aims to resolve the theoretical and practical problems confronted by Chinese rural development in the process of modernization and to provide references for government when it attempts to formulate the agricultural development strategies or related policies.

It is also supposed to provide consultation services for the scientific decision-making of enterprises and to train high-quality talents for agriculture and rural economic management. The center holds the “Seminar on Antipoverty Issues” and has built up a database of hundreds of Chinese villages.

2. Research Center for History of Chinese Language

Research Center for History of Chinese Language was founded in November 1999 and was appointed as the National Key Colleges and Universities Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education in December 2000. Taking advantage of the academic strength and influences of the Doctoral Research Programs on Chinese Language and Literature, and the Post-Doctoral Research Programs on Chinese Language and Literature in Zhejiang University, the research center is specialized in and renowned for its academic reputation in the field of Mid-Age Chinese language, Modern Chinese language, and Exegetics. This is the first Chinese language research center of its kind open up and accessible to the public after the new Zhejiang University was established.

The research center consists of Ancient Chinese Language Research Institute, Mid-Age Chinese Language Research Institute and Modern Chinese Language Research Institute. There is a specialized Dunhuang Documents Corpus.

3. The Center for Research of Private Economy

The Center for Research of Private Economy, inaugurated in 2002, with its research focus on the private economy, is the first academic and policy research institution established in Chinese Universities.

It was appointed as the National Key Colleges and Universities Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences and the National Innovative Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2004.
The center has set up the biggest database of listed private enterprises in China.

4. National Institute for Innovation Management

National Institute for Innovation Management (NIIM), the National Innovative Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences, is one of the important research institutes in the field of innovation management in China. It enjoys a high academic reputation in its earliest research on innovation management and sustainable competitive power in China, fruitful achievements and broad network of international collaboration.

5.Center for the Study of Language and Cognition

The Center for the Study of Language and Cognition (CSLC) is one of the National Innovative Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences. It has the striking advantages of inter-disciplinary research between social sciences and natural sciences approached by the following six fields: Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Anthropology, Computer Science and Neural Science.

CSLC has been aiming at establishing higher-level disciplines and conducting research into challenging basic theories and the difficult problems in reality chiefly in the areas of language and cognition. It devotes to the development of influential and thoughtful academic work-team, the information database on the basis of exploring the innovation of administration mechanism, the training of learners and scholars, the allocation of research resources. The center has already set up a lab of cognitive modeling and a corpus of language cognition.

6. Institute of Christianity and Cross-cultural Studies

The Institute of Christianity and Cross-Cultural Studies (ICCS)is one of the State-designated institutes in the areas of social sciences and philosophy. The aim of ICCS is to study the Christian culture and the cultural interactions between Christianity and other cultures. Currently, ICCS focuses on the following five fields in accordance to the expertise of our staffs and the current development in this area:

  • 1) Hellenistic, Hebraic and Christian Culture
  • 2) Religious Philosophy and Inter-religious Dialogue
  • 3) Cross-cultural Dissemination of Christianity
  • 4) Christianity in the Changing China during the Transformation Period
