Moral Sentiments and Universal Value

Published:2010-11-09

Market economy with dramatic changes not only brings the people material affluence, but greatly impacts people’s weak moral souls. Some immoral sentiments: selfishness, vanity, jealousy, hatred, avarice, dishonesty strongly hold root in people’s hearts, but such values as benevolence, humility, generosity, integrity, diligence and faith are somewhat leaving us. However, what makes people discard the most fundamental humanity value and moral sentiments? What are the criteria for moral sentiments? Is universal value an empirical presupposition or a true universal conscience standard? In this lecture, Professor Luo Weidong, a well-known expert in Adam Smith studies will elaborate on these issues in detail.
