On the evening of May 17, 2010, the opening ceremony of Academic Activity Month of Subjects of Arts, ZJU and the first lecture were conducted in ZijingangInt’lConferenceCenter by Research Institute of Social Sciences, ZJU. Gong Xiaokang, Deputy Director and Yuan Qing, Director of Promotion Dept. of Key Achievements, Research Institute of Social Sciences were present at the ceremony.

Professor Xu Liang from School of Humanities, ZJU chaired the ceremony; Mrs. Yuan Qing, on behalf of the Research Institute of Social Sciences, delivered a speech. She first introduced the aim and relevant academic activities of the Program, and she later said the academic research of institutes of higher education should exercise humanistic spirit and academic atmosphere, and she hoped this Program could carry forward the tradition and academic perseverance.

After the ceremony, Mr. Li Youzheng, Deputy Director of Int’l Semiotics Institute, pioneer of semiotics studies and distinguished guest made a lecture named “Orientation of Eastern Zhejiang Thought School and Humanistic Thoughts of the World”. It is the 48^th in the lectures of “Zhejiang University Oriental Forum”, sponsored by Research Institute of Social Sciences and School of Humanities, Zhejiang University.

In the lecture of great academic value and significance, Mr. Li, with his keen perspectives and unique observations, expanded students’ horizon and won warm applause from the audience. After the lecture, students and teachers had excellent communications with Mr. Li.

The Activity, usually conducted from mid-May to mid-June, has the theme of “Thinking reason, seeking truth and development”. It aims to create an excellent academic atmosphere, boost the disciplinary exchanges and development and upgrade the comprehensive strength of subjects of arts of ZJU. In order to match the Conference of Subjects of Arts, ZJU, the Activity will introduce lectures of “Zhejiang University Oriental Forum”, lectures by professors of Qiushi Scholars Program and Cheung Kong Scholars Program, lectures by chair professors on Y. C. Tang and Cao Guangbiao Funds, forum of young scholars and forum of presidents. And the lectures will be about frontier issues, hot and difficult issues of different disciplines.
