In 1998, the new Zhejiang University was established, marking a new historical stage for humanities and social sciences of Zhejiang University. It adheres to the consensus that first-class universities require first-class philosophy and social sciences. Zhejiang University has successively held five conferences for humanities and social sciences, achieving historic breakthroughs in multiple indicators such as the approval of major projects, the awarding of high-level achievements and the construction of important platforms. It has played a significant role in fostering virtue and nurturing talent, inheriting civilization, exploring true knowledge and serving the society.

Zhejiang University currently has 13 schools (departments) in the field of humanities and social sciences, namely School of Literature, School of History, School of Philosophy, School of International Studies, School of Media & International Culture, School of Art & Archaeology, School of Economics, Guanghua Law School, College of Education, School of Management, School of Public Affairs, School of Marxism and Department of Sociology, and it also has a total of 76 university-level research institutes, 1 national top think tank construction pilot, 3 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education and 1 laboratory (cultivation) of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. In terms of construction of humanities and social sciences disciplines, Zhejiang University has 19 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, including philosophy, theoretical economics, applied economics, law, sociology, Marxist theory, etc. As for world ranking, Social Science General has entered the top 1‰ of ESI global disciplines. 16 humanities and social sciences disciplines have entered the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and 8 disciplines have entered the top 50. Hospitality and Leisure Management ranks first among Chinese mainland universities. The number of teachers in humanities and social sciences at Zhejiang University is 1117, and the number of students is 11769.

Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences is a functional department in charge of the research and development of humanities and social sciences for Zhejiang University. Its main responsibilities include: Formulate the university's development plan for humanities and social sciences; Manage the research projects of humanities and social sciences; Manage and promote scientific research achievements in humanities and social sciences; Manage research institutions of humanities and social sciences; Manage the think tank platform, achievements and teams; Organize and promote interdisciplinary research; Organize and coordinate academic exchanges and cooperation domestically and abroad; Assist in promoting the construction of humanities and social sciences disciplines, journals, etc.
