Professor François Victor Tochon Gave a lecture in SIS

Published:2011-03-12

On the afternoon of March 11, Professor François Victor Tochon, from Education School of University of Wisconsin-Madison, delivered an excellent academic lecture on Deep Approach to Chinese Teaching in Room 118, East Block 6, Zijingang Campus, attracting many teachers, graduate students who major in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Applied Linguistics’, and some visiting scholars.

Based on his own experience of learning Turkish, Professor Tochon expressed his reflection on traditional language teaching and then introduced his theory of taking deep approach to language teaching. He emphasized the correlation between culture and education in his theory and the project-based teaching method designed according to students’ personalities in order to instigate their subjective initiative. He put up with a new teaching theory that teachers should not be result-oriented but process-oriented. He redefined the role of language teachers, believing that the language teaching should be dominated by the evaluation and instruction of students’ spontaneous and creative learning, rather than repeatedly inculcating language knowledge to the students.

During the Q&A section, present teachers and students actively discussed with Professor Tochon about the adaptability, the practice and the promotion of deep teaching in Chinese teaching. Moreover, Professor Tochon offered many valuable suggestions to the students who hold the desire to teach Chinese in America. The lecture ended in thunderous applause.
