【Seminar】New Trends in Leadership Research: Big Data, Computational Methods and Evolutionary Mismatch Hypothesis

Published:2019-06-21

Date: 28th June, 2019

Time: 10:00-12:00 a.m.

Venue: Room 1102, The Administration Building, Zhejiang University

【Speaker Introduction】:Dave Wang is a third year PhD student in Management and Organizations at Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, USA. His current research looks at biases, the misalignment between perception and behavior or people’s misconception of their social reality. In understanding the origins of biases, either from an evolutionary, social, cultural or cognitive lens, he attempts to draw behavioral insights that may guide companies in designing effective interventions or policy makers in making policies that maximize social welfare.

【Seminar Abstract】:The digital age brought about both opportunities and challenges for leadership research. This seminar attempts to initiate a discussion on leadership research in view of the latest trends in big data, computational methods and evolutionary-psychology theory. To introduce the three new trends, I bring in two of my latest projects, one published at Psychological Science on facial-width-height-ratio (fWHR) and another work-in-progress on the relationship of physical exercise and leadership. These studies are not representative and nowhere close to a benchmark for leadership research but I hope, by initiating a discussion using these studies, I could inspire new ideas, thoughts, and ultimately new contributions to leadership research. Some of the challenges that I aim to bring our attention to are ethics and legal concerns, following the General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union and the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA) in the United States. Other challenges include measurement issues and sampling biases that are often associated with big data studies. Overall, we live in an exciting time for leadership research.
