【讲座简介】

In this talk, I review the evidence on demographic developments in China, which has 2nd lowest fertility rate in the world, after South Korea, and examine the potential for raising fertility closer to the rates that would sustain population, albeit at lower levels than current population. The analysis links birth of the first child to marriage rates and for birth of the 2nd or more children to the role of grandparents in helping young families adjust to the increased demands of babies, particularly on women, based on analysis of  the China Family Panel Study.  It lays out a strategy for combining special surveys of attitudes toward bearing children with analyses of  large language models that probe changes and differences in attitudes  of potential mothers.  The two bodies of evidence can be used to develop an artificial intelligence simulation model of fertility to assess possible policies to increase the proportion of young families who choose to have two or more children. Ideally, the policies should then  be tested in experiments in particular locations.

RICHARD B. FREEMAN 教授，哈佛大学 HERBERT ASCHERMAN 经济学讲席教授，美国国家经济研究局（NBER）研究员，哈佛法学院劳动与公正经济中心（CENTER FOR LABOR AND A JUST ECONOMY）联合主任。FREEMAN 教授是美国艺术与科学院、美国科学促进会院士，曾荣获劳动经济学 MINCER 终身成就奖（2006 年）、IZA 劳动经济学奖（2007 年），并于 2016 年被评为美国经济学会（AEA）杰出学者称号。FREEMAN 教授的研究领域广泛，涵盖科学家与工程师的就业市场、科技创新的市场转化、中韩等国劳动力市场、人工智能与机器人的就业影响，以及劳动力市场代表性机制与员工持股等议题，学术成果在全球范围内产生广泛而深远的影响。
