讲座摘要:
This presentation will focus on the contribution of the ethnographic and sociolinguistic tools to the discourse studies. Based on a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and directed by Luisa Martín Rojo (Martín Rojo, in press), the discussion will show an example of how the context of Madrid multilingual schools was explored by using what has been called a critical sociolinguistic ethnography (Heller, 1998). Such an approach, according to the current notion of “social practice” in contemporary sociology, and the concept of “community of practice” in linguistic anthropology, allowed us to study how a social order is (re)produced in everyday classroom interaction in the institutional space of the school, and what the social consequences are. Within this framework, data from a particular educational program (Welcoming Schools Program) will be used in order to examine which kind of knowledge about teaching-learning a second language and about immigrant students is produced through interaction. Particularly, the analysis will focus on the position of a group of Chinese students in the interactional-institutional-social order that is constructed in such an educational program.
