讲座简介:
 In this presentation, Dr. Wenshan Jia will first highlight the major contributions to communication theory from the Chinese perspective in the history of Chinese communication research.  Such contributions have been made from diverse communication approaches such as rhetorical as represented by Oliver and Xing Lu, interpersonal as represented by Guoming Chen, Wenshan Jia and Huiqing Zhang, mass communication as represented by Yuezhi Zhao and so on.  Three kinds of contributions will be discussed:  First, meta-theoretical; second, conceptual; third, theoretical.  In addition, I will also discuss some major contributions to Chinese communication research by scholars of sister disciplines such as sociology, psychology and anthropology as well as philosophy.  Finally, He will discuss the current challenges and future research directions in Chinese communication research which include the issue of the universal dimension of Chinese culture and communication, her changing patterns within the intercultural context.
 
讲座人简介:   Wenshan Jia (Ph. D., University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Wang-Fradkin Professor , an endowment professor, teaches and does research in Communication Theory and Methods with emphasis on Intercultural /Global/Business/Organizational Communication, more specifically on communication between East Asia and the West, Chinese communication and media and globalization, Department of Communication Studies, Chapman University, City of Orange, California, USA.  He has taught in State University of New York, USA and Northwestern University in China.  He is Research Fellow of International Academy for Intercultural Research and faculty member of Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication based in Portland, Oregon, USA.  He is Chairman of Faculty Personnel Committee, Chapman University as well as Professor of College of English, Xi’an International Studies University. 
 
Dr. Jia is the recipient of Wang-Fradkin Professorship 2005-2007, highest Chapman University faculty research award.  He is also the recipient of the biannual Early Career Award by The International Academy for Intercultural Research, granted in May  2005, as well as the recipient of University of Massachusetts at Amherst Graduate School Fellowship with research stay of two years in Harvard University-Yenching Institute.  He was on the Doctoral Honors Roll of The National Communication Association in 1998 and was the recipient of the title of “Outstanding Professor/Researcher” by the U. S. Department of Justice in September, 2001.  Jia has received quite a number of research grants/awards/fellowships.  His research/conference activities have been funded by multiple sources such as The National Endowment for Humanities and The Ford Foundation.  His research publications have been extensively cited in related international scholarly circles.
