On November 22, 2017, the Symposium about implementing the Spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and Establishing Philosophy and Social Sciences with Chinese Characteristics in New Era was held in Zhejiang University (ZJU). Representatives of department of humanities and social sciences from Zhejiang University , Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, East China Normal University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University and Sun Yat-sen University were gathered together to discuss how to create the system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics and respond the challenges and problems in the new era.

Representatives from different universities discussed new situations, challenges and strategies of constructing world-class philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics in the new era, the ideas to perfect the current management mechanism, and promoting the internationalization of philosophy and social sciences. They also shared their experience in discipline construction, cultivation of major projects, management of research institutions, construction of think tanks and social services, and put forward future working plan and suggestions.

After that, Tan Fangzheng, the deputy director of Department of Social Sciences of Ministry of Education made a concluding speech. He believed that the exchanges among universities are meaningful and the construction of philosophy and social sciences is confronted with new changes and demands. All colleges and universities should thoroughly study the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and make bold explorations and practices on daily work in light of requirements of the new era and our actual conditions.

Specifically, Tan put forward the following four points:

a. It is important to achieve Three Excellences: excellent politics (the work of philosophy and social sciences need maintain a high degree of consistency with the Central Government), excellent disciplines (only first-class disciplines can effectively transform China into a scientific research power), and excellent resources on leading talents and teams.

b. It is important to achieve Three Satisfactions in implementing the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, constructing the five major systems and making four services.

c.It is important to achieve Three Modernizations: Chinese modernization of scientific theoretical principles to guide our studies, modernization of governance to construct evaluation systems based on scientific research and management laws and our actual conditions, and internationalization of discourse communication to spread Chinese stories.

d. It is important to highlight Three Priorities: the construction of a system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics should give priority to the Party development, ideology and personnel work in order to create outstanding research and management teams.
