On the afternoon of June 22, 2010, Professor Ravi Kanbur, a well-known economist of Cornell University delivered a speech of “Protecting the Poor Against the Next Crisis” in Zijingang Int’l Conference Center of ZJU. Professor Huang Zuhui, Director of the Research Institute of Chinese Agricultural Development chaired the lecture. Over 10 government officials from the developing countries currently attending the “anti-poverty” training class by the Ministry of Commerce in ZJU and over 100 students and teachers of ZJU were present at the lecture.

His lecture aroused great interest in the audience, in particular, the officials from Africa, Latin America and South Asia, who, based on actual conditions and work experience, raised a lot of questions on how to design subsidies properly, how to coordinate the functions of different organizations and how to balance different interests, etc. Students and teachers of ZJU also raised questions about the role of NGO in the struggles against poverty and hot issues in Chinese economy.
