The Humanities Delegation of Zhejiang University Visiting Famous European Universities Promoting the Internationalization of Humanities and Social Sciences

From 6th to 15th November 2012, the humanities delegation, comprising of professors from the School of Public Administration, Guanghua Law School, School of Education, School of Management, School of Humanities and the Institute for Cultural Heritage and the management from Academy of Social Sciences and Department of Archives headed by Professor Luo Weidong, Vice President of Zhejiang University joined in the activities of “Zhejiang University Week” held in Berlin, Germany and visited Sciences Po. Paris and Sapienza, Rome as well.


During the “Zhejiang University Week”, the delegation participated in a lot of activities. Vice President Luo Weidong, on behalf of ZhejiangUniversity, signed agreements with Professor Hermann, Director of German Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and Barbara, Curator of the National Library of Germany on the sharing of ancient and rare books and book protection and digital understanding and on the bilateral cooperation between ZhejiangUniversity and the National Library of Germany. Besides, ZhejiangUniversity donated A Complete Collection of Paintings of the Song Dynasty, altogether 21 books in 8 volumes to the National Library of Germany. President of several schools: Professor Yao Xianguo, Professor Yu Xunda, Professor Xu Xiaozhou and Professor Zhu Xinli had congenial talks with the presidents of relative departments from Freie Universitaet Berlin and made cooperative proposals for academic exchanges and student visits. In addition, Diao Changyu showed the video of “Digital Database of Dunhuang Grottoes” to the guests present at the conference in the National Library of Germany.

Sciences Po. Paris, established in 1871, is one of the most distinguished universities in social sciences in France and enjoys a high international fame in politics, sociology, economics and history. It is also renowned as the cradle of social elites in France since it gave birth to a lot of presidents and prime ministers of most of the French-speaking countries. It established cooperative relations with ZhejiangUniversity in 2011 and gave warm welcome to the delegation this time. Apart from having discussions on expanding the cooperations in relative humanities fields, two schools had more fruitful results in the exchange student programs, in particular, for the students in law schools. Moreover, Zaki Laïdi, a famous professor in politics would come to ZhejiangUniversity to discuss the cooperative issues in politics. In addition, the delegation from ZhejiangUniversity answered the questions from the students who are interested in the exchange programs. After the discussion, the delegation visited the library of Sciences Po. Paris and asked several questions.

Sapienza, Rome, established in 1303, is the biggest national university in Italy. Vice President Federico Masini gave a warm welcome to the delegation and introduced the general situation of the School, in particular, its law, economics, politics, education and archeology. In return, Luo Weidong, Vice President of Zhejiang University introduced ZhejiangUniversity and expressed hopes on the cooperations in relative fields, especially, in cultural heritage studies and protection, technological archeology and museum construction. After the discussion, the delegation visited the PlasterMuseum—the museum for the liberal education of Sapienza.

Vice President Luo Weidong, on behalf of ZhejiangUniversity, called on the alumni in Paris and had talks with them. Wang Xiaojie, Director of Zhejiang University Alumni Association in Paris talked about the efforts made by them in publicizing the image of ZhejiangUniversity and uniting the fellows of ZhejiangUniversity, etc., which won high praise and appreciation from the delegation.


This visit, one of the key strategies of “going global”, aimed at accelerating the international exchanges of humanities studies, promoting the academic relations of humanities with international famous universities and research institutes, propelling more scholars and experts to go global.
