Robert F. Engle, Winner of Nobel Prize for Economics, Planting a Tree in the “Nobel Forest” of Zhejiang University
The “NobelForest” on the Zijingang Campus of ZhejiangUniversity hosts 19 trees in all, planted by 19 Nobel Prize winners awarded the honorary professors of ZhejiangUniversity since its reunification with other campuses. Professor Robert F. Engle, winner of Nobel Prize for Economics planted a crabapple holly in this forest on the afternoon of June 16, 2013 and on the same day, he was engaged as honorary professor of ZhejiangUniversity and was wearing the badge of ZhejiangUniversity.
Professor Robert F. Engle planted the tree with Mrs. Engel and tied a nameplate to the tree. Mrs. Engle said, “A person is mortal but a tree is immortal. It is very meaningful for us to plant a tree.” Professor Robert F. Engle said humorously he would bring his grandson to ZhejiangUniversity next time and hoped the tree would grow luxuriantly.
Professor Luo Weidong, Vice President of Zhejiang University, planting the tree with them, said, “It is hoped that Professor Robert F. Engle would visit ZhejiangUniversity frequently and the friendship and cooperation between us would be, as the growing of the tree, growing vigorously.”
Robert F. Engle, winner of Nobel Prize for Economics in 2003, is a famous economist, PhD. on economics from the University of Cornell and chair professor of Michael Armellino, Finance and Accounting of New York University. Robert F. Engle, expert at the empirical model analysis in the dynamic economic finance, created ARCH model, GARCH model, cointegration model and weak exogenous model. In addition, in the Zhejiang University Oriental Forum held the same day, Robert F. Engle delivered a speech entitled “Supervision of the Global Systematic Risk” and discussed his latest research fruits on the supervision of systematic risk by using the volatility laboratory with the students and teachers of Zhejiang University.
