“Synchronic Distribution and Diachronic Development of Words Encoding ‘to smell’ in Chinese”, co-written by Professor Wang Weihui from Zhejiang University (The first author) and Professor Hiroyuki Akitani (The second author) from Ehime University was published in Language and Linguistics [15(5)699-732)] (also included in SSCI and A & HCI).
Words that encode the notion “to smell with (one’s) nose” are cross-linguistically basic words. The paper gives a comprehensive description of this category of words in Chinese, with respect to both synchronic distribution in modern dialects and diachronic evolution in history, and explanations of their synchronic-diachronic correlation.
