“Ritual”, as a behavior basis for traditional Chinese morality and cultural capital of national identity, embodies the practicality of traditional cultural quintessence. The Commemoration of 100th Birthday of Mr. Shen Wenzhuo and International Symposium on East Asian Ritual and Music Civilization held in Hangzhou from October 14th to 16th, 2016 is aimed at studying traditional Chinese rituals and folk rituals in contemporary world, in particular, in East Asian countries as well as exploring the identity and innovation path of contemporary rituals.

The Symposium, co-hosted by Zhejiang University, its School of Humanities, Institute of Ancient Books, Asian Research Center as well as Center for Chinese Ritual Studies at Tsinghua University, East China Normal University Press, Chinese Ritual Studies at Zhejiang University, attracted over 70 experts and scholars on ritual studies from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, Hong Kong in China who exchanged views on the studies of ritual literature, reconstruction of contemporary rituals, etc. The Symposium received 46 papers of new perspectives and good quality on major aspects of ritual studies, indicative of current research in this field.
