题目：A multiculturalist-sociolinguistic analysis of Chinese discourse

内容: This paper offers a multiculturalist-sociolinguistic study of the particular case of contemporary Chinese discourse. The first part considers sociolinguistics in its mainstream structuralist and functionalist forms and argues that, under the implicit assumption of linguistic cultural relativism and academic aculturalism, they have not paid proper attention to the culturally incommensurable and power-oriented nature of language and its enquiry. The second part outlines a more holistic account that is at once locally grounded, globally minded and historically conscious, ‘multiculturalist-sociolinguistic’, perspective and sets out its cultural relevance. To take the proposal seriously, finally, the paper moves on to a case study where samples of Chinese media discourses on a range of topics and across a variety of settings are studied. The multiculturalist-sociolinguistic analysis shows (1) how Chinese discourse constitutes a distinct identity vis-a-vis western discourse, (2) how it forms internallocal complexities on the one hand and externalglobal interconnectedness with Western discourse on the other hand, and in addition (3) how they transform themselves towards a historically better direction.
