This is a PowerPoint lecture that gives an overview of the American writer Ambrose
Bierce, the only major American writer to fight for four years in the Civil
War and then write about it later. A bit of biography, a bit of literature,
and a bit of inquiry about the functions of literature about war. This
lecture is based on the book Professor David J. Klooster published with Russell Duncan,
who is now the Fulbright professor in Shanghai.
