CONTENT

Self-conscious collecting behaviors in China can be reliably traced to at least as early as the Han dynasty. Over the course of the subsequent two millennia that led up to the Republican Era, art collecting had formed a unique cultural, social, and political phenomenon. The court established collections to advance its political and ideological causes; literati collected art to articulate their social identity, and cultural identification and distinction; and the domains of collecting, connoisseurship, and art-making themselves were imbricated in dense patterns of mutual interaction and exchange — all of these were significant aspects of the history of collecting in China. Motivated by disparate ambitions, these various collecting efforts collectively define the shape of the history of collecting in China.

Over the past thirty years, with China’s economic growth and cultural development, collecting and corresponding research also enter an active phase. Just as educational and academic institutions are engaging in collecting and related research, a thriving community of independent collectors has also emerged. Against such a background, from 11th to 12th of November Zhejiang University will be hosting an international symposium on Collecting and Connoisseurship in Chinese Art History and exploring this subject from various perspectives, in order to promote advancement in the state of art historical research and current cultural construction.

In this symposium, specialists from the Palace Museum, Beijing and Taipei, the Shanghai Museum, the Art Museum at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, the Freer Gallery of Art in the US, and scholars from Zhejiang University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Taiwan University, University of California, Brown University, and Europe, will engage in the in-depth discussions from perspectives of the culture of collecting, imperial collection, gender in collecting activities, regional disparity, information and transportation, and connoisseurial case studies; covering Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing, the symposium will address issues related to ancient bronzes and stone tablets, calligraphy, paintings and ceramic collections.

In order to facilitate the symposium and to complement the topics under its agenda, the Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology and the Zhejiang University Library will be co-hosting a special exhibition, The West Discovers East Asian Art, 1842-1930.
